Best Fibre Broadband Plans

Although there aren’t so many broadband providers in Singapore, little differences in price and service can still tilt one customer over to the other. When it comes to something as essential as home broadband connection, Singaporeans expect fast connection, competitive price and of course, a good customer service experience in case of unforeseen disruption to the connection. So how do the telcos here fare?Let’s find out.

If you are looking purely based on price comparison, it is clear that M1 offers the cheapest amongst the competitors, with Starhub following closely behind with its latest promotion of giving a free 3-month subscription with a 24-month contract. On the other hand, Singtel offers the most expensive subscription, although you can get a waiver of the one-time fee if you sign up online.

Broadband Performance

Obviously, having a cheaply-priced broadband plan is useless if the performance is terrible. Here, we refer to IDA’s data for the performance of the ISP to have a look:

In terms of average peak download throughput – MyRepublic’s Ultra 1Gbps performed the best amongst its peers, while the others were pretty similar in performance.

Average peak download throughput (or download speed) is the most commonly associated metric with broadband performance. It represents the rate at which your computer will be able to fetch content (e.g. web pages, pictures, music, video etc) from the Internet.

We also looked at upload throughput, which is the measurement of the rate at which your computer will be able to send or upload content (e.g. pictures, music, videos etc) to the Internet. In this case, Singtel came out tops, followed by Starhub, while MyRepublic and Viewquest lagged behind.

Broadband Service

Other than price and performance, service attitude and availability is extremely important when it comes to broadband services. However, this aspect may be a little more difficult to judge, since each person may have a rather different experience with the individual ISPs.

We turned to online forums to have a look at some of the comments and found that overall, Viewquest seemed to have excellent reviews with regards to their product and customer support, while MyRepublic was praised for their good-value for money although customer service scored pretty low. Other mentioned that once you’ve set up the installation with MyRepublic, you probably don’t need to deal with them any more throughout so this should rank low on the decision matrix.
