Noting that Aussie airline Qantas has hacked back its loyalty points reward scheme by 40 per cent, it makes formerly loyal customers think about where their loyalties actually lie. Only giving the full points to first class passengers, and slashing back rewards for business and economy passengers, it appears that Australian travellers and premium credit card holders are looking elsewhere for their loyalty deals, and have turned their attention to Singapore.

Interviewing Keith Mason of the Point Hacks website, the Courier Mail found that passengers are being advised to switch to other airlines, and to credit cards that offer points and rewards that aren’t available in Australia.

“Looking outside of Australia to Singapore Airlines’ Krisflyer or Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles program if you’re keen on using your points on international flights can yield much better value than Qantas,” Mason told the paper.

There’s even limited evidence that Australian business travellers are relocating to Singapore for various reasons, not least a better deal on financial rewards. While it’s churlish to suggest that they’re simply after airline loyalty points and better credit cards, it’s clear that Singapore is offering far better regional value than elsewhere.

Singapore has always welcomed newcomers. This should be no exception – we have far fewer killer spiders, and better credit cards.
